Mental Epic Style Effects

Mental Epic is a mentalism effect where three covered predictions written on the top row of a slate or whiteboard are found to match those later written in a row below it.

It was created by Hen Fetsch, based on Peter Warlock's "The Taped Slate" (1944) [1] and first PRESENTED (but not explained) in Pentagram, Vol. 6, No.7 (April 1952). It was later marketed in 1955 by his good friend Gene Gordon's magic shop. (Citation: Magicpedia: Mental Epic)

Quinta

Five items are shown in a line. A spectator names some number and the performer counts to that number long the line of items, starting at one end, counting along and then back until he reaches the number and stops on one particular item (the predicted item).

Force Position:
If item 1 is on your left and item 5 is on your right, the forced item will be item 4.

Object count - Counting the first object (used when the chosen number is even)
Move count - Starting with the first object then moving to the next object as a count of one (used when the chosen number is odd)

Force end - The end closest to the forced object
Opposite end - The end furthest from the forced object.

Even Number
Use object count. If the number chosen is a multiple of 8 or two more than a multiple of 8, you start at the force end. Otherwise you start at the opposite end.

Odd Number
Use move count. Mentally add one to the number, then follow the rules for even number to determine which end to start at.

Overhand Shuffle - Injog to Move Card to 2nd or 3rd From Top

Start overhand shuffle by running one card on top of the top card. Injog the next card, then finish as a normal injog shuffle. The top card is now second from the top.

To make it third from top, run two cards on to the top card, injog the next then finish as a normal injog shuffle. The top card is now third from the top.

#3 Prediction Card Trick

Prepare three piles of cards:

Pile 1: Three cards (any cards)

Pile 2: Four 3's (from all 4 suits)

Pile 3: Five cards (any cards)

Put all these cards together IN THIS ORDER at the top of a deck to create the illusion that you are going to be randomly taking them off the top though they will have been prearranged (Note 1).

Now tell your subject that you will use your magical psychic powers to predict which pile the volunteer will pick because your psychic powers are so strong. In fact, you're so good that you will write down your prediction ahead of time (stated as dramatically as possible). Without allowing the volunteer to see what you are doing, write down the number 3 on a large sheet of paper, fold it up, and then turn to the task at hand. Instruct the volunteer to think of a number and really concentrate. Close your eyes and pretend to be "sensing" what the volunteer is thinking. Then instruct the volunteer to point at the pile she or he has chosen. After pointing to any of the piles, say, "Yes, that is what I predicted! I have written down the number 3!!"

You have no chance of being wrong. Pile #1 had 3 cards, Pile #2 has all 3s, and the third pile is "Pile #3." Obviously, you don't reveal what your plan was or the effect will be spoiled.

Note 1: To get all the threes you could first overtly gather them to perform Dr. Daily's Last Trick. After the performance, put the threes on the top of the deck and shuffle on top three more cards, then throw the rest behind. Now you're ready to go.

Strange Face In Mirror Illusion

To trigger the illusion you need to stare at your own reflection in a dimly lit room. The author, Italian psychologist Giovanni Caputo, describes his set up which seems to reliably trigger the illusion: you need a room lit only by a dim lamp (he suggests a 25W bulb) that is placed behind the sitter, while the participant stares into a large mirror placed about 40 cm in front.

The participant just has to gaze at his or her reflected face within the mirror and usually “after less than a minute, the observer began to perceive the strange-face illusion”.

The set-up was tried out on 50 people, and the effects they describe are quite striking:

At the end of a 10 min session of mirror gazing, the participant was asked to write what he or she saw in the mirror. The descriptions differed greatly across individuals and included: (a) huge deformations of one’s own face (reported by 66% of the fifty participants); (b) a parent’s face with traits changed (18%), of whom 8% were still alive and 10% were deceased; (c) an unknown person (28%); (d) an archetypal face, such as that of an old woman, a child, or a portrait of an ancestor (28%); (e) an animal face such as that of a cat, pig, or lion (18%); (f ) fantastical and monstrous beings (48%)

Hand under handkerchief (pocket) gag

Put your hand under a handkerchief (or inyour pocket) and say "name a number from one to five" they say the number, you remove the handkerchief and you are holding up that many fingers. Also can be funny if you hold up the wrong number of fingers "Well it doesn't work every time"

Addition Questions To Carrot Answer

Try this game: Ask people these questions, in this order: "What's 1+1? What's 2+2? What's 4+4? What's 8+8?" Then ask them to name a vegetable. They almost always say carrot.
